THE MESSENGER, NOW / LIVE CELESTIAL FIELD

Mercury can appear to move backward against the stars. That apparent reversal is retrograde. Move through time until it happens; then change the viewpoint without changing the physical state.

01 / THE MESSENGER, NOW · LIVE CELESTIAL FIELD

Mercury is here.

The message is still in transit.

This instrument places Mercury and Earth in their present relation, then lets you move through one Mercurial year. When the sky-direction reverses, the page names the event plainly: RETROGRADE. The astronomy is the anchor; the gold trace makes the changing relation legible.

RETROGRADE

Retrograde is an apparent reversal in the sky. Keep moving through time or jump ahead; Mercury itself never reverses its physical orbit.

DIRECTMESSAGE IN TRANSIT

Establishing the present relation…

THE LAST ORBIT / MERCURY–EARTH SYNODIC ROSETTE

Every meeting changes the pattern.

Mercury overtakes Earth about every 116 days, but the meeting does not recur at one fixed address. Successive conjunctions write another chord into the shared field.

Day 0 / first conjunctionTwenty-two successive conjunctions are traced as an editorial mean-orbit model. Real orbits are elliptical and inclined; the rosette makes recurrence legible rather than claiming a literal fixed figure in space.
WHY DOES IT APPEAR TO REVERSE? ↓
02 / RETROGRADE · CHANGE THE VIEW, NOT THE STATE

RETROGRADE: the planet does not turn around. Your view does.

You just saw Mercury appear to move backward. Keep the date fixed and change only the reference point. One physical state can produce three different descriptions of the same motion.

METHOD NOTE / AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION

The path appears to reverse.
Time does not.

Astronomical retrograde is an apparent reversal created by the changing line of sight between moving observers. The heliocentric orbit continues forward.

FORMAL RELATION Δϕ(t) = (ωsignal − ωreference)t ε = |νplayed/ν₀ − gⱼ| < εc

Hg borrows the image as a fictional diagnostic for phase-lock drift. That analogy belongs to the story system, not to astronomy.

WHERE THE ANALOGY STOPSRETROGRADE IS NOT A WINDOW FOR UNDOING AN EVENT.

No astrology. No supernatural causation. No claim that time reverses. The astronomical phenomenon remains the authority.

03 / RESIDUAL · MERCURY / PERIHELION / RELATIVITY

Mercury comes back a little off.

Press play. Watch Mercury come back. Then slide from Newton's picture to Einstein's picture.

STEP 1 · PRESS PLAY. WATCH THE CLOSEST PASS COME BACK A LITTLE AHEAD OF LAST TIME. REAL EFFECT: VERY TINY IN REAL LIFE. MAGNIFIED HERE SO YOU CAN FEEL IT.

THE SIMPLE STORY

Newton gets Mercury almost right. But each closest pass lands a hair ahead of where the older picture says it should. Einstein explains that tiny leftover. The Sun changes the geometry Mercury moves through, so Mercury's path slowly turns forward.

THE ORBIT WAS NOT WRONG.
There was one tiny leftover shift to explain.
NEWTON EINSTEIN

1 · WATCH IT

Mercury comes back.
But the nearest point does not land in exactly the same place.

2 · NEWTON

Almost right.
The older picture explains nearly all of Mercury's motion, but leaves a tiny leftover shift.

3 · EINSTEIN

The leftover has a cause.
Einstein describes gravity as curved spacetime: the Sun changes the geometry Mercury moves through, so Mercury's ellipse slowly turns.

ONE-MINUTE VERSION
STEP 1
Watch the closest pass repeat.
STEP 2
Notice that the nearest point creeps forward a little.
STEP 3
Newton gets almost all of it right.
STEP 4
Einstein explains the tiny leftover because the Sun changes the geometry of spacetime around it.
04 / THE NEAR RETURN · EARTH + VENUS

Nature nearly repeats itself.

Five Earth–Venus conjunctions draw an almost fivefold return. Watch the measured mean-period geometry emerge first; then compare it with the exact 13:8 construction and expose the residual instead of pretending nature closes perfectly.

05 / LUNAR WITNESS · PHASE → NODE → SHADOW

A new Moon is not automatically an eclipse.

Phase tells you how much of the illuminated Moon faces Earth. Eclipse requires another condition: the Moon must also cross the orbital node closely enough for the shadow geometry to line up.

PHASE ≠ ALIGNMENTNew Moon happens every lunation.
Eclipse requires node geometry too.
This is a geometry model, not an ephemeris.
06 / ORBITAL WITNESS · SECOND PROOF / MARS

The reversal belongs to the view.

Pull away from the sky chart and watch Earth overtake Mars. The physical orbits continue forward while the Earth→Mars sightline writes the apparent retrograde against the stars.
