The Strange Loop

A recursive counterpoint loom.

Offer a phrase. Turn it through mode, relation, and time. Hear it return as structure, echo, and many-voiced form.

01 PhraseA single idea enters the Loom.
02 TransformKey, mode, relation, and time reshape it.
03 WeaveCounterpoint becomes independent voices.
04 ListenHear the motif migrate through the field.
05 ReturnThe idea comes back changed.

Start with the input that feels natural. If you import MIDI, the Loom keeps the performance timing you played rather than flattening it before playback or export.

1Give it a motifDraw, import, or type a short phrase.
Live musical context: key, mode, meter, style, and relationship changes rebuild the study automatically. Tempo retimes playback immediately without changing the notes.
Corpus engine: generate a fresh study motif from the trained Bach chorale model. The embedded corpus represents 143 files / 139 chorales; generated phrases are new Bach-informed study material, not quotations or J. S. Bach compositions.
Drag horizontally to draw a note. Right-click a note to remove it.
Choose any Standard MIDI file. The Loom selects the strongest non-drum melodic lane and keeps that lane’s original tempo and note timing. Polyphonic files are not silently flattened.

Enter pitches followed by their length in sixteenth notes. Example: E4:1 G4:1 A4:2. Use R:n for a rest.

Entry locks are reproducibility controls: locked motif entries remain fixed when the surrounding counterpoint is regenerated.

3Listen and exportCompare your phrase with the generated counterpoint.
Hear the motif first, then generate counterpoint to unlock the four-voice playback.

What to listen forYour source idea should remain recognizable as it returns in independent voices rather than becoming a synchronized chord block.
What can changeRegister, entry timing, and the degree of transformation can shift while the motif travels through the ensemble.
What stays yoursYour original phrase remains the reference and can always be auditioned separately from the generated counterpoint.
